10 Time-Saving Kitchen Tools

Mom's are always pressed for time and with a zillion things to do, well, here's some kitchen stuff to help us save time for other chores

1. Anything dishwasher-safe: Buying dishwasher-safe kitchen tools and utensils will save loads of cleanup time, and it will assure that they are thoroughly clean and safe to use again.

2. Multiple cutting boards: Instead of chopping, cleaning and chopping again, have several cutting boards on hand. That way, you save time and avoid cross contamination. (Use a separate knife when cutting meat.) Buy acrylic, dishwasher-safe cutting boards.

3. Several colanders: As with cutting boards, having several will save time, especially for meals where you need to wash or drain several foods. It may also prevent cross contamination if you are draining shrimp or other raw meats or seafood.

4. Kitchen scissors: Buy a pair of sharp, sturdy shears. They are great for tasks from cutting chicken apart to "slicing" pizza to snipping herbs into the salad. Find a pair that is dishwasher safe.

5. Portable timer: Don't be a slave to the stove. Free yourself from the built-in oven timer by buying a small battery-operated or dial oven timer. Take it with you out to the garden or to the home office.

6. Funnels: These are handy for pouring your bulk items into smaller containers, filling salt shakers and pepper grinders, and returning unused cream to the container. It makes the job faster and cleaner.

7. Multi-tiered food storage shelves: Buy the stair-type storage shelves -- small ones for your spices and large ones for your other canned goods. By having everything visible, you save time searching through the pantry.

8. Microwave-safe measuring containers: These nifty time-savers allow you to mix and measure without the fuss. Buy large containers; that way you can measure and heat milk, or melt butter and add remaining ingredients.

9. Non-stick spray: Choose your favorite kind and keep it on hand to spray all your pans before cooking or baking. It will make cleanup much easier and faster.

10. Helpers: Kids, husbands, or roommates are all time-saving devices. Put them to work on the tasks they enjoy while you take care of the rest.
