I was intrigued with this accent light.. And for a good reason. It can produce 16,777,216 different colors of accent light! How cool is that? If you're the type who want to change colors, moods, themes in a room then this will be a great lighting addition.

The lamp's four LEDs (two red, one blue, and one green) generate 256 different hues, 256 levels of saturation, and 256 brightness settings. And here's one more thing that I find so cool, it has a wireless remote control with a color wheel. A color wheel?? Yes. A color wheel so you can have continuous, seamless scrolling through the color spectrum, and dual dimmer buttons provide smooth transitions between different levels of saturation and intensity of light. The light can also be set to automatically cycle through soft, muted tones and deep, bold shades of light. I'm pretty sure you won't get bored with those choices of mood lighting.

The lamp sits at a 45┬║ angle so that it projects onto a wall, and the LEDs are rated for 100,000 hours of use. Available at Hammacher for $199.95.

Make Your Rooms Come Alive with Pictures

No room in your house looks good if it lacks a certain feel, a sense that this is a unique room within your home. A simple act such as hanging up a few pictures can transform your space from a dull, lifeless room into a lively, bright area. The right pictures can enhance your room's color accents and bring a nice contrast, creating a room that welcomes you instead of turns you away. Not just any pictures will do, however - you need to make the proper choices as to what you will decorate your room with. This article is your guide to making your space come alive with art that you can hang up on your wall.

Shop for the Room

Your lifestyle and taste is the most important factor you considered when designing your home, so why shouldn't you decorate based on that principle, as well? Whatever you choose to do with a particular room, it is more in alignment with your purpose to choose based on what you want, instead of going with whatever the home fashion world says is 'in' at the moment.

No matter what room you feel needs decorating, your bedroom, bathroom, living room, etc., it is important that you have in mind what you want the room to do for your home. Do you want to entertain guests and have parties? Do you want peace and quiet? Is this a room that your kids can play in or a room that you will use for a hobby?

After you decide what the room is for, choosing a color scheme is easy, since you know what the room's purpose is. Neutral colors and mellow greens are excellent for giving the room a quiet feel; a lively yellow makes it clear that this is a room for the kids; a pale, tranquil blue is wonderful for making the room into an office or work space.

Now, thus far the purpose and color scheme is set. This gives you the proper groundwork on which to base a decision as to what is the best artwork to hang on the walls. Continuing the example in the previous paragraph, bright colorful cartoon-like pictures would be for the children's room, mellow floral pictures are great for a retreat area, and landscape or maybe animal portraits for a workroom.

Choosing the Style

Like the color scheme, art can alter a room's individual mood. Artwork hanging on a picture rail can serve as an anchor that holds the room together. It also can serve as the foundation for your particular style. Traditional, modern, contemporary, entertaining, casual and romantic styles are some of the possible options to select. This part of the process, like all the others, is completely dependant on your taste and desires for the room. Here are some ideas for implementing some of these schemes.

  • Entertaining: The pictures could include bright, happy colors both in the print and on the frame. Subjects could include old-time comedic actors like the Three Stooges or Laurel & Hardy, or maybe pictures of dogs and cats playing with one another.
  • Modern: Strong black accents in tapestries and iron frames combined with black-and-white photos create a sophisticated look. When this is combined with a modern color scheme, the effect is striking.
  • Calm: Artwork with neutral, earthy colors combined with horizontal landscape subjects creates the feeling of a quiet retreat into Nature, away from modernity and the intense pressure of time.

You can also mix and match to create your own unique signature. Creating your own pieces is very satisfying and gives the room an extra personal touch.

How to Arrange the Pictures When Hanging

Deciding where and how to hang the pictures involves choosing the best placement in order to achieve the maximum effect. Deciding where to hang them also means giving the room a focal point as well as an individual character. Some possibilities to consider are:

  • Give each piece breathing room to create the feel of an art gallery. This approach works very well in hallways. To do this, stand in the center of gravity for the first piece and take either one large step or two small steps to either side. This will give you an idea of how far apart to place each piece.
  • When placing pictures above a sofa, hang the picture about six to nine inches above the sofa at eye level.
  • If you have a number of pictures that have a similar theme, group them tightly together in order to create a statement and/or a focal point. This technique works equally well on walls that are both large and small.
  • Place an odd number of pictures about the same size in a row on a horizontal plane. This achieves a sense of both balance and space.

Deciding where and how to hang your pictures in advance lets you know what size you will need and how many in order to get the look that you want.

Pictures are overlooked as a design accessory. Most likely, this is a result of many people's ignorance of how pictures can help improve a room. Plan everything out before making any purchasing decisions. This puts you in a much more negotiable position in terms of what you can use to make your room into a living space.

What's a rain chain?  Truth is, we don't use this much back home in the Philippines. I'm from the Bicol Region and rains and typhoons there aren't the gentle kind, so rain chains aren't really popular. But just the same I find them very functional and decorative as well.

In case you're wondering, gutter rain chains functions similarly to downspouts. It directs the rain from the roof to the ground. The chains serve as buffer so the rain won't fall so heavily and create havoc on your ground or on your garden soil. Rain chains are also very decorative particularly those garden rain chains make attractive additions to your garden.

Rain chains comes in assorted materials. There are those made of copper, aluminum, brass, glass, iron or stainless steel and in various designs too. But if you're into crafts and have some spare time, then you can make some rain chains made of materials you like.

Anthropologie is one of my favorite online stores. They care products that are unique and has that homey and whimsical feel to it. I've browsed their lighting collection and found this - Magpie Chandelier. What makes it interesting is that its made of found things!

The Magpie Chandelier is described as..
Found objects, trinkets and cast-offs revel in their new role as exuberant participants in this celebratory fixture. Each is a bespoke creation crafted by hand of reclaimed materials, so no two will be exactly alike. I'm a big fan of coupons. Some might scoff that ohh, you're just gonna be able to save cents from those, but think about it. If you purchase 10 times, and get a discount of a dollar each time, then you save $10! That could go for a nice pedicure, or some extra things you need in the house. And I'm pretty sure, most homemakers purchase a lot more than that. Anyway, one site that is know for coupons and savings is http://www.couponchief.com. I browsed around the site looking for some coupon codes on home items and here's what I thought of the site.

First, the site look, navigation and functionality it offers coupon hunters like me. Very impressive. I've been to coupon sites that are so messy and I ultimately give up looking for the coupons I want. Coupon chief is very easy on the eyes, with lots of navigation tabs you can click to bring you to whatever you're looking for. My favorites?
  • Search Bar - its very prominent. It's not hidden and it just invites you to go on and do your coupon search.
  • Browse by Category - on the homepage you can easily narrow your search to whatever you need. They have categories for wholesale, skin care, clothing, footwear, home decor! and more.
  • Tabs by Store - i love this! Most of us have regular stores we buy from and searching for their coupons with Coupon Chief have just become easier. For example, you want to see the available all modern furniture coupons you simply have to check out their alphabetically organized store coupons list. Easy!
Coupon Chief also has this unique feature called Pays2share where if you share a coupon you know of, you upload it to the site, and somebody uses it, then you get a share from the sale! Cool right? You just share what you find and you get to earn from it. Hmm, if I happen to stumble upon good Kmart coupons etc, I'll definitely be joining this program.

An extra feature of the site, which I also enjoyed browsing is their blog. You get to learn about different stores and what else, but more about coupons. If you're looking to snatch some big savings from those regular purchases, use coupons and Coupon Chief is definitely worth checking out.

I've been toying with the idea of setting up a home office. You see, I work from home plus hubby is a professor so we have piles of paper, computers, printing supplies etc. It's not a good sight specially when were busy and no time to get organized. For the meantime, I have a big working desk set up near our living area, with a huge book shelf at my back for our books and materials. This isn't enough though, especially since our daughter started school too and now has her own paper clutter. So, things get cluttered down on the floor.

So I'm seriously thinking of setting up a real home office. Another thing is that I just use random chairs in the house whenever I work on my computer and it can really lead to back pains. I should be getting some office chairs since these are designed for comfort and to lessen the pressure on my back whenever I work long hours.

I'm now organizing things and planning how I'd set up our home office. I'm keeping the desk I currently use and I'm planning on splurging on good executive chairs. Tsk, tsk, I know I'm no executive but I'm plenty concerned about my comfort and the condition of my back. Were also adding another filing/organizing cabinet because I don't like things piled up on the floor. Of course, I have to draw up at least a rough drawing of the layout so getting around our small nook won't be a problem too. I'm thinking of having an L-shaped layout like the photo above, but I want it pushed over in the corner of the room...Any thoughts?
