We are now more or less done with furnishing our house and on the start of the new year were all set to fix the front of our house. Of course, I'd want to have some decorative planters. I grew up with both parents who are so into gardening so we have lots of indoor and outdoor planters in my childhood home.

I guess one of the reasons why I want a lot of plants in our new home is just to make me feel more at home and miss my family less. Plants also give any place a really cool ambiance and a unique feel so I want a lot of greens in our place. The only constraint is that our place now has such a limited space so we really have to choose with care which garden planters to use to maximize the space yet still manage to look creative, unique and organized.

Initially I wanted to have some window planters like the one above but our space as well as the layouts really are a problem. So we have decided to have something like this...

This type of standing planters is really flexible and can be easily be moved around to suit the space requirements. We're also thinking of planting Chinese bamboo along the fences coz I kinda like the sound it makes when the breeze passes through it. But I'm not sure if it will complement the other plants we already have. Hmmm, I'm getting really excited now on how everything will come out..

This site has been acting a bit weird lately. Mostly because I've been doing some tweaking and turning here and there. Since this is my first ever blog and it has just celebrated its 1st birthday, I decided to give it a whole new look.

For the past year, Pinaywife Atbp. has been using the Green Marine by Ian Main. I was happy with that template so it stayed for a year. Lately though I wanted to spruce up the site with some color and after sorting through several templates I decided to use the Style template by Ariane Naranjo. I love the colors and the background graphics. It's a bold color yet the letters doesn't overwhelm the whole blog.

I also like the way the sidebars are organized. I still have some fixing to do (I'd like to make the fonts bigger..) but as of now I can say I like how it looks..

December and January  is a great time for vacations. For one, we get to have a lot of holidays so we could all really relax from work. My husband and I make it a point to travel regularly and also to expose our daughter to different cultures and places.

Right now though we are still on working and saving mode coz we have just recently moved and we still have a lot of plans that would really need a lot of financing so this vacation time were planning on going on an overnight trip somewhere near here. But if we have money to burn I'd probably be booking (hehe dreaming!!) a jamaica all inclusive resort

This would definitely be the ultimate vacation for us. When it comes to romantic vacations, Jamaica is really one destination that would always pop in my mind. Gorgeous beaches, great party atmosphere, and the best amenities makes it a top vacation destinations as well as venues for caribbean weddings.

Hmmn all this is insipiring me to work more.. Who know next year I might just be enjoying the Caribbean breeze..

Got this on my inbox this morning and I just found it absolutely fascinating. Don't ask me where it is I really have no idea where it is. If you know, please do drop me a comment :) I'm guessing it's China coz of the Buddha and what looks like the Great Wall..

Wikipedia describes Ice Sculpture as a form of sculpture that uses ice as the raw material. Sculptures from ice can be abstract or realistic and can be functional or purely decorative. Ice sculptures are generally associated with special or extravagant events because of their limited lifetime.

The lifetime of a sculpture is determined primarily by the temperature of its environment and thus, a sculpture can last from mere minutes to possibly months. There are several ice festivals held around the world, hosting competitions of ice sculpture carving.

Imagine creating something as spectacular as this and have it melt in just a few hours..

Don't you get frustrated when you get several calls from numbers you don't recognize. It may be a wrong number dialled case, a prank caller, a persistent telemarketer, a phone survey, a debt collector. Whoever it is, it can be unnerving to receive frequent calls from people you don't know.

Phone Number Reporting is one way of finding out who it is by checking out the comments submitted there, who knows the numbers frequently calling you may be listed there. It you have talked to the caller and verified who they are and why they are calling it is also a good idea to leave a comment on the website to let other people with similar experiences know what the call is all about..

What is it about this time of the year that makes my skin so dry? Must be the cold wind? Good thing my mother has a lot of home-solutions for these kinds of skin problems. Here's one that really really works for me.. Try it out!

start by using a good body scrub to exfoliate in the shower.
mash up pineapple in a blender and rub it in your elbows and knees.
leave it on for about 15 minutes so the natural enzymes can do their work.
shower it off and follow up with a thick lotion .
be amazed at how soft your skin feels..

It must be a curse, but most of us in the family have allergies. Me, my sister and my mother also have asthma and unfortunately I seem to have passed on this condition to my daughter. All of us are extremely sensitive to dust, pollens, dust mites, paint odor etc.

My mom's condition is more severe than us and even her room cannot be swept with broom, either a wet rag or a vacuum cleaner. My parents room also has hepa filter air purifiers to filter out extremely small pieces of dirt / junk from the air.

Over the years we have learned that asthma attacks can really be difficult yet with careful management it can be avoided. Knowing what triggers it is a big help.

One of the things I needed to adjust to here in Phnom Penh is that, there are no jeepneys or buses around. There are taxis but they are just "tlai" or expensive and not really practical if you're just going short distances. People here usually have their own motorbikes or cars. If I have to go somewhere on my own and no one is available to drive me around, I don't have choice but to take motodop or cyclo. Public transport here means the motodop, cyclo or the tuk-tuk. The tuk-tuk is covered so it can provide some protection against the heat of the sun, but its a little expensive too particularly for me who has yet to learn the Khmer language and master my bargaining skills.

So the best option is to take motodop or cyclo.
The problem with these is that it doesn't have cover so I get really too exposed to the sun. I've finally understood why people here like using long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Just to protect their skin from burning. But I don't think I could wear something long coz it'll make me sweat a lot and feeling sticky just grosses me out.

At times, I don't have much choice but to wear a thin jacket. I also apply sunscreens to avoid sun burns, although I have no aversion to being tanned, I don't like being burned as it turns my skin red and I end up looking like a roasted pig.
The lotion I use regularly now contains sun protection and I always have sunscreens on hand just in case I have to stay out in the sun for sometime. Thankfully, I haven't been "burned" yet.

A friend of mine has been asking if I'm feeling homesick. I said, not yet. It'll probably hit me during the next few weeks because I know I'll be missing Christmas in the Philippines.

There are times though I kinda feel lonely and what I'd do is to head over to USA Donuts to get some sugar fix and it's somehow enough to make me feel a little better.

It also helps that internet calling to the Philippines from here in Phnom Penh is really cheap. Just about 200 Riels, roughly about 2.00 Pesos per minute. Chatting is also helping a great deal in keeping homesickness at bay.

For now, I'm busy still fixing up our house, I've taken up a new project hehe sorting out photos, getting them on digital format, then making a short movie or compilation. When January comes, I'll be busier looking for some part time work. And of course, I keep my sites updated (somehow..) among others..

People are really social beings and that is just evident everywhere and you can also see that on the net. Forums are just everywhere and I bet there is a forum for all topics you can ever think of.

A lot of websites I've visited have also added a forum so they could chat it up and exchange ideas with their readers. Forum hosting though is a bit expensive and a little complicated to create for non-techies.

Good news for those looking into creating a forum, we could now have free forum hosting, have full access to it, with loads of features like unlimited number of messages & users, 1GB space for files, photos etc., 40+ themes, 30+ languages, personalization, chat and more.

Isn't that a great news? Once I finish some web projects, I'm definitely trying out this free forum hosting.

I did write about getting an online education in my other blog. That time it was just a plan but I'm now serious about it and have started to prepare the requirements for admissions in a Philippine open university.

There are actually a lot of online education programs now available. If you are considering getting an online education, go with an institution that is credible and accredited by governing educational institutions, like Nouveau University which received its degree-granting license from the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education.

The Nouveau University is also backed by highly qualified and top-caliber educational professionals who are there to provide excellent instructions to their online students. Recently, the Nouveau University has acquired the Institute of Construction Management and Technology therefore expanding its offerings in the areas of construction management and construction technology with specialization areas in construction operations, residential construction management, and land management.

Distance learning or online education is really a great opportunity for us, especially those who are currently working but would still like to improve themselves in other areas of knowledge and expertise. I'm really excited about this and I'm looking forward to doing the course work and hopefully once I have my online degree, it'll help me in reaching my career goals..

8 tbsp cooking oil
1 cup cold water
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 kg crab

4 pairs Chinese sausages
8 eggs
6 pcs soya bean cake (tokwa)
1 cup sweet black sauce
3 whole garlic pound to a fine paste
400 g fresh red chillies - pound to a fine paste
1 1/2 cup roasted peanuts, chopped coarsely
5 stalks Chinese parsely - wash and remove roots
1 pkg spring roll wrapper or 600 g freshly made spring roll wrappers

PROCEDURE:
  • Peel turnips , slice and cut into thin julienne strips. Wash and drain.
  • Heat 5 tbsp oil in wok over high flame, put in dried prawns and fry for 1 min.
  • Add in the turnips and stir fry for 2 mins.

  • Heat oil in work over medium flame, fry bean curd cake until light brown on both sides. Remove and cut into thin strips.
  • Lay out various ingredients on the dinner table.
  • Place a spring roll wrapper on a dinner plate, spread 1 tsp sweet soy sauce or oyster sauce evenly on the wrapper.
  • Spread garlic and chili evenly.
  • Heap 2 tbsp turnips then sprinkle on crab meat, prawns, sausages, omelette, bean cake, peanuts and parsley.
  • Roll and seal with little water.

Me? Yes! It's one of my dreams that I plan to realize before I retire and I'd like to make it a hobby when both me and my husband are old already and the kids are all busy with their own lives. We both love to cook. He's more of the general cook and I love baking so it'll make sense to open a restaurant with a bakeshop.

We are both talking about spending our "old age" in the Philippines and we plan to have the restaurant as our past time. Of course we realize that it will require a lot of effort and finances on our part so were starting to save for that even from now. Knowing the right mix of food/menu, the right location, the best staff and good quality restaurant supplies and equipment among others is absolutely necessary if we want to make a success out of this venture. If we also decide to go into catering, it'll be nice to have a good number of quality chafers to enhance our food buffet presentation.

I'm constantly surfing around for ideas and I chance upon this site offering low cost restaurant equipments. Not only do they have a wide variety of choices but they also have great offers like free shipping for orders $195 above, 110% price match guarantee, and other kitchen equipment discounts.

Getting ready is getting informed so when we do decide to make purchases for the restaurant supplies we need, we'll be able to get the ones with the best prices and quality.

A couple of months ago I wrote about a weird quirk of mine: grocery shopping addiction. My husband weird habit is going all the way out to Divisoria just for a plate of pancit canton, but now he can't do that :). Here's another weird thing about me, I take too much shower when I am at home. Like I usually have at least six showers during the day and one or two showers at night.

At first it was my husband who was into too much showering, but I guessed the habit rubbed off me. My mother usually asks how much is our water bill and the the shower stalls are probably complaining from overuse..At times, though I feel like I might turn into a human prune from too much water.

It's really hot and humid in the Philippines and here too in Cambodia so to keep me refreshed I love taking showers. When I also go out and its hot and dusty I really can stand it and would take shower as soon as I get home. When we were having the house here in Phnom Penh built, we really took extra time to choose our shower columns. We got one that has adjustable water sprays and with a hand-held showerhead aside from the overhead shower.

Of course, since we frequently use it, its a must that we keep it clean and well-maintained. Good quality shower columns are pricey so to make it last longer we take care of it. Its good to spray shower cleaner on walls and doors after showering and to keep the shower curtains dry to prevent mildew. Keeping the bathroom or shower room well ventilated also helps to prevent mildew.

Showering is really a fun  and relaxing experience for me.. If I were to give in more to this addiction, I'd buy myself steam showers. Wouldn't it be heavenly to soak in the luxury of having different massage jets? Heavenly... I guess now is time for my next shower.. Ciao!

I was looking at the calendar this morning and it just struck me that, "Hey! yesterday was my first year as a blogger!". I can't imagine it has been a year already.. hehe and I didn't really think this would turn out as a serious hobby for me.

It was November last year, I was surfing the internet and I came across two blogs, Toe's KuroKuro Atbp and Liza's A Simple Life. Both are written by Filipinas, one a career woman living in another country, the other a very entreprenuer minded stay at home mommy. I found their entries interesting and very engaging and I found myself backreading through all their previous entries. Then it just struck me, could I do this too? I'm not really a very good writer but then if I could share my honest views about life and things around me, some people might want to read me also.

So, Pinaywife Atbp. was born. My guinea pig hehe. I have no idea how to build a site and Blogger is simple and easy to manage so in two days time I had a really simple blog up and running. Trial and error was my way of learning how things are done. But I really had fun especially the part where I had to use a new template, changing the layouts, hunting for posting ideas, and meeting fellow bloggers.

From a trial-and-error Pinaywife Atbp. blog site, I have fallen madly in love with blogging that I started several other blogs some still with Blogger (Laugh Out Loud, Desserthaven..) and after sometime I took the jump and got my own domain and started my 1st wordpress blog - Pinaywifespeaks. Now, I have just launched another wordpress blog - CelebrityadsOnline and there are two others under construction.. (PinkChopsticks and TheOddCatalog).

I suppose now you could see how addicted to blogging I am but I feel really great that these site I enjoy making are now making me some $$$, though not much but enough to pay hosting fees, a daily cup of coffee and a nice pair of shoes every now and then. More than the monetary return, its a great way for me to release stress, update myself with the latest trends and meet people of similar interests.

Cheers to more years of blogging! :)

I've been blogging for a year now and for the past months I've had the chance to network with a lot of webmaster and visit interesting sites. When I started out I was utterly clueless on what to do and what are the possibilities online.

There are a lot of websites I've visited to learn about how to build a site, how to manage it and keep its content updated, to get some readers to visit and have them interested in what you have to share. It took me long hours too and till now I am still learning and discovering how to make a blog site and have some return from it.

Among those web help sites I've checked out I have constantly encountered the term Search Engine Optimization. I didn't seriously consider this but once you get really dedicated and serious about your internet endeavors you'd really want to have your site optimized for search engines so you could have a share of the steady search engine traffic.

For companies and websites who really want to take advantage of the big number of search engine users and increase their company and site visibility and achieve long term success, having a credible and reliable internet marketing arm is a great investment.

Just when I thought our first month here in Phnom Penh would be really okay, my husband had to be rushed to the hospital because of gastric ulcer. For sometime he has been complaining about burning sensation in his stomach and he kept postponing going for medical check up.

It was a really scary and stressfull experience for me since I am not fluent in Khmer language and I don't know how to talk to the doctors etc. Most of them don't know much English though some could speak French which I don't understand myself.

Thankfully, my in-laws are really supportive and understanding of the fact that I still haven't adjusted to the way things are done here. We were lucky also that we brought him to a governement hospital with complete facilities so he got the necessary treatments.

I've been feeling really helpless these past few days and it did motivate me to really learn about how to be more independent here. Well, I could at least start to learn how to drive a motorbike so I could drive out on my own..

He developed gastric ulcer coz of his habit of having exactly three meals a day and no snacks. He's now well and at least he's learning to eat smaller meals and take snacks. Getting sick in a foreign place is really difficult so I better stay healthy hmm..

When I was in college I swore I won't ever find myself wearing eyeglasses. I felt like it would make me look all the more dorky and nerd. The commute from school to our home too discouraged me from getting a good frame even if I needed one.

A few years after I would always feel dizzy and would have frequent headaches so I could not postpone it any longer. I went to see an optometrist and thankfully I don't have anything seriously wrong with my sight.

The doctor warned though that I needed glasses to protect my eyes from being so strained as I work long hours in from of the computer and I also work handcrafting jewelries. Just so my eyesight would be protected I had to get a pair of eyeglasses. Initially I thought it would really be a bother and cumbersome but I just needed to adjust to using it. Now, I don't feel comfortable without having it with me.

Having a good eyesight is really important and its best to take care of it that regret it later. And with really stylish frames coming out now, I don't really have fears now of looking dorky..

Our family usually refers to it as the "curse". During our childhood most of us have thick, black and really straight hair. Then when we reach the age of about 12-14 all of us, cousins would have our naturally straight hair getting curly or wavy and would be wrestling with the curls and the extra volume.

For me it would have been fine if not for the thickness of my hair. When it became wavy, the volume was just so unmanageable and I felt like I looked like a scarecrow or worse a witch! So, I ended up looking for good hair straightener to help me manage and tone it down.

When I was in high school I used to have it straightened in beauty salons regularly and it cost a lot. My hair has also been severely damaged by the chemicals they use for straightening. For sometime, I decided to give it a rest and let my hair grow back to its healthy and natural shape. After that I decided to look for a professional hair straightener which would let me achieve the straighter hair I want with minimal damage to my hair.

For now I prefer using hair irons so I could just straighten my hair when I need it and leave it as it is when I don't have to go out. Tourmaline hair straightener is also great since it gives off negative ions and enhances the shine of the hair, leaves the hair hydrated, and healthy.

After using an flat hair straightening iron I would always apply a shine serum to keep it shiny and since the heat of course damages the hair, I use an intensive conditioner twice a week to nourish and repair my hair.

Some airports could just be so dragging and boring. To think that people spend a lot of time lingering, waiting for flights it should be comfortable, pleasing to the eyes, well-equipped with amenities for the weary traveller, with lots of food choices and places to sit and wait.

Of all airports I've been to, I love Singapore's Changi Airport the most! I find waiting in airports dreadfully boring and tiring but when I have to transit in Changi, I find it the opposite. It's like being in a big mall with all accomodations and entertainment you want.

I know a lot of people gushing about it being fully carpeted, strict when it comes to cleanliness, but what I really like about is the presence of a lot of greeneries inside. Walk along corridors and you'll see potted orchids full of blooms, they have miniature falls surrounded by flowers, they have a fern garden, a cactus garden, a butterfly garden..

That doesn't end there. Food choices are just so varied and you can find whatever you crave for. Internet kiosks are available free. You can watch movies and tv shows in their public lounges. Restrooms are really clean and well maintained. Facilities for those traveling with babies and children are available. Information desk is very helpful and if you are in  transit for more than 5 hours you can take a city tour for free. Shuttle train service is also free if you want to hop to the 3 different terminals. Transit hotels and showers are also an option if you want to freshen up. And oh! I should mention, shopping is absolutely fantastic!

Mailboxes would never go out of style. That's what I think anyway.. In this age of all things digital and paperless, I still consider it a pleasure and more meaningful to receive a well-written letter or a greeting card on my mail box.

I realize those letters are now far and few in between. People now are more used to communicating via mobile phones and the internet. Most of the time mail boxes are just relegated the role of storage for bills and promotional materials from some companies.

Still I insist on having one in front of our house. It looks quite nice and will definitely addcharacter to my front yard eh...My daughter is rooting for one too.. I think she wants it coz she thinks its some sort of a bird house..

If you're like me who gets the itch to change the look of every room in our house every now and then you'd know that one of the best ways to make a room attractive is to add a wall art. What I really like about wall arts as accents is that you have a wide variety of choices if you want to create a different look every time.

One wall accent that I particularly like is the metal wall art because of their uniqueness and beauty and if you want to make a central area in a particular room, add a metal wall art and it would surely be a conversation piece.

If wall accents made of metal are too heavy, another fabulous decor option is the canvass wall art. These are light weight but the colors and textures that you will add to the room is awesome. You can choose a scenery you prefer with colors that you want to highlight in your room.

To spice up a room, you can also add up candles, mirrors, lamps etc. But whatever choice you make sure that you like it. You will be the one using it the most so best go with the one that you are most comfortable with.

Cambodian food here is really delicious and affordable too. A plate of this delicious dish costs no less than 50 Pesos and the serving is huge. I 'm actually planning to try out all kinds of noodles and rice toppings they have and creating a post about it but I don't think my waistline and my weighing scale would agree to that..

The photos are actually meant for my pinaywifespeaks blog but I am so lazy to post there.. hehe. Will update my blogs soon.. As soon as I can get enough sleep, have finished unpacking and getting a reliable ISP..

Eye glasses now are really stylish yet some could be really burn a hole in our pockets, so I was pleasantly surprised to know that there are still quality yet affordable glasses in the market just like the $ 8 Zenni Optical Rx Eyeglasses.

They actually have a huge selection of frames to suit all styles and preferences. I'm very particular about the material of the frame used and it was great to note that they do have plastic or acetate frames. I prefer these since it is more lightweight and durable too. I do drop glasses often :). For others who prefer other materials, there are frames made of stainless steel, titanium, aluminum alloy and more.

If you are picky about the rims of your frames, there are various choices of rimless, half-rims and frames with full rims. If you are also on the lookout for frames for children, Zenni Optical also has them in their selections.

These makes shopping for glasses all the more easy 'coz you can actually view photos of each glasses and choosing the best one could bring quite a dilemma. But if you are undecided, better choose several pairs to go with each outfit and with the price of $ 8 Zenni Optical Rx Eyeglasses you won't have to worry about breaking the bank balance even if you get 10 pairs.

Our house is clutter all around. We've been sorting out our stuff, which ones well have shipped for storage in our parents house in Bicol, which ones for shipping to our new home in Phnom Penh and which ones well be bringing on our trip next week.

I loathe packing but its something that must be done. I've been meaning to sort things out last week but procrastination as well as some events just had me postponing packing. I don't like having the house as messy as this with boxes everywhere and my daughter un-sorting all the things I've already sorted.

On the other hand, I'm a bit glad to have something to be busy with to take my mind off and postpone my homesickness. It'll be a a year maybe before I could come back and visit my parents and I'll definitely miss the Philippines. It has been home for most of my life so there are things I'll miss. I'll even be missing the traffic, the street food, the music, jeepneys, the malls, just hearing the language, and of course I'll be missing my family and friends but well I have to make do with phone calls, chatting and web cams..

For the next few days I will not be able to update this site for obvious reasons and when we get there, I'm not yet sure about the internet connection at home. As I know internet connection in Phnom Penh is expensive and I'll have to do with good old dial-up services or broadband with speeds guaranteed to make me fall asleep. I'm beginning to appreciate Smart Bro now :) , I have the unlimited plan and I can surf anytime, all the time and when I get to Phnom Penh I'll have to wait for the off peak hours so it'll take time for me to get used it. Huh! Some things can really be appreciated when you don't have it anymore..

But expect me to keep updating this site as well as my other sites and I'm kinda excited to blog about my new experiences. New place, new things, new people, new culture and traditions, exotic food, well all translates to new stories to tell. Till next time...
